Recently, the Ministry of Education released 2020 annual "Chinese Government Outstanding International Students Scholarship" selection results. Nine students from Shanghai University were honored with this award!

The "Chinese Government Scholarship for Outstanding International Students in China" is established by the Ministry of Education.  Experts are organized by the Ministry of Education to evaluate the referees academic performance, scientific research ability and performance in China. With a large number of applicants and strict evaluation requirements, the award is one of the highest honor bestowed by the Chinese government for international students. A total of 575 students have been awarded the 2020 "Chinese Government Scholarship for Outstanding International Students in China“. 

ANIL SOLMAZ, from Turkey. He is currently pursuing his Master’s Degree in College of Liberal Arts at Shanghai University. He noticed the great charming of linguistics in his first undergraduate years. After graduating the Department of English Language Teaching, he thought that learning Chinese could broaden his perspective. With its unique features, Chinese language could teach a future linguist some unknown or cutting-edge mysteries. Not just with its language but it political system, China was an attractive dream for Anıl. He undertook exploring the truth about China by being in China, and spreading the truth to everyone as his duty.

Accordingly, Anıl started to explore China’s economic, political and social structure while learning Chinese language and linguistics. In September, 2019, he translated Xi Jinping Wit and Vision- Selected Quotations and Commentary into Turkish language. In November, he attended The International Symposium on Xi Jinping Thought on the Governance of China, and reported his speech titled ‘Xi Jinping Thought on the Struggle Against Corruption’.  Meanwhile, he started to work as interpreter for journals such as Aydınlıkand uwidata.com. His article titled ‘Xi Jinping's Thoughts on Poverty Alleviation in a New Era’ was published by Teori, Turkish political quarterly. On the other hand, Anıl continued to conduct his studies in the field of Chinese and Turkish comparative linguistics. He contracted two book-translations from China Intercontinental Press, starting to learn China better. He translated Cai Yanxin’s Architecture, and acquired China’s cultural heritage, history of Chinese cities, story of important buildings, and the significance of diverse ethnic and religious buildings. He translated Wu Chun’s Philosophyinto Turkish language, deepening his knowledge on China’s ancient philosophical theory. While these translation works were improving his China perspective, on the other hand, they promoted his linguistic performance skills. In December, 2020, he presented his report regarding China’s success in poverty alleviation along with Prof. Tang Qingye at the online conference held by Shanghai University International Students Office. Now, Anıl, as a Shanghai Representative of Turkish Students Union of China, is organizing webinars that gather the professors of Sinology Departments in Turkey and the professors of Turkish Language Departments in China together, serving to improve the friendship between the two countries and languages.

MUSTAFA GHULAM is from Pakistan, as Applied Mathematics PhD candidate in Shanghai University. From 2018 to 2020, he has outstanding research ability and published 10 SCI journal papers as the first author, of which 3 papers have an impact factor higher than 4.0. Because of his excellent scientific research ability, he was sent to Italy as academic visitor for two weeks. In the field of Astrophysics and black hole theory, he has made remarkable achievements at home and abroad. He actively participates in various cultural activities held by Shanghai University. He deeply studies Chinese culture and history, and personally experiences the spiritual connotation of Chinese festivals and customs. He highly agrees with China's development concept and is good at summarizing the details of life. In particular, he deeply considers the development achievements represented by high-speed rail, electronic payment and bike sharing.

CELI REYNA MARIA FE, Peruvian， PhD candidate in College of Liberal Arts at Shanghai University.  As a Chinese government scholarship student, she devoted herself to academic research, described the cultural differences between China and foreign countries from her own perspective and published one academic paper. Becoming an Intercultural Translator was published in New College English, Intercultural Communication Reading Course as the first author.

TADIWANASHE MUGANYI, from Zimbabwe, is a PhD student in School of Economics. He is passionate about technological innovation and its transformative impact on society. Since enrolling, he has devoted himself to scientific research. Outside of campus, he is an industrial economist and financial technology researcher, carrying out extensive practice and research work in his professional field .

During the epidemic, with the help of the international student academic sharing platform of the School of Economics, he shared the theme of "China in My Eyes". Discuss the contents of material supply, institutionalized management, medical system, and economic recovery and development in China's fight against the new crown virus. He fully affirmed the measures and achievements of China's "anti-epidemic" and was quoted and broadcasted by media platforms such as China Global Television Network (CGTN) and Shanghai International Channel (ICS). During his 5 years in China, he participated in a number of projects aimed at making China's technology ecosystem work with African and European entrepreneurs. In the future, he will continue to pay attention to the dynamics of China's economic development and actively carry out related academic research.

A A M MUZAHID, from Bangladesh. He is currently pursuing his Ph.D. degree in Communication and Information Systems at Shanghai University. He is also a “Coordinator of Foreign Affairs” and team leader of the “Computer vision and 3D Virtual Reality” research group at the Institute of Smart City, Shanghai University. As a result of his enthusiastic about studying Computer vision and 3D Virtual Reality, he has published three SCI Journal papers in top rank (Q1) and one EI conference paper as the first author, and several SCI journals as a co-author. He also published one complete academic book in 2019 by LAP. Apart from the academic matter, he also developed the skills of leadership and teamwork after joining Shanghai University by participating in many projects. He has worked for “International Students Ambassador” in 2018 and worked as a co-founder of “Gateway”, is an entrepreneurship club for international students of Shanghai University. In the epidemic period, he organized his county-mates to donate masks to Shanghai University. And he is elected as the President of Bangladesh-China Youth Student Association, China and serving this organization from 2019 to till now (www.bcysa.org), which build a bridge of friendship between Bangladesh and China. Recently, he is invited by the Chinese Embassy in Bangladesh to assist in building an alumni association and working as “Member Secretary” of Preparatory Secretariat pannel of “Association of Bangladesh China Alumni” (www.abc-alumni.org).During the epidemic prevention and control period, she chose to stay in China and shared her personal experiences on her Twitter account, which attracted a lot of attention. More than 35,000 people around the world shared her articles and became a model for international students. At the same time, she actively organized international students and recorded group recitation videos to cheer for China. She participated in the Shanghai Cervantes Library Epidemic Quarantine Essay Competition and won the prize.

In addition, she loves traditional Chinese culture, and systematically learns Taijiquan and Chinese calligraphy. She has performed in many China and foreign exchanges activities. She said she would study hard and bring it back to Peru.

AMERIGO QUATRINI, comes from Rome, Italy. He is currently pursuing his Master’s degree in Linguistics at Shanghai University. In late 2020, Amerigo won second prize in a Yangtze Delta-wide writing competition with a paper on sociolinguistics and LGBT rights. Amerigo has been living in China for over 6 years and has developed a strong sense of loyalty towards China; because of this reason during the 2020 pandemic, he took onto his hand the task of educating people on the actual situation of Shanghai by publishing a photo-reportage on his social media, where he explained what the situation actually was and to stop believing fake news. On his spare time, Amerigo enjoys painting, photography, and he’s also an active member of a few online support groups on Facebook and Instagram.  

Yee Jia Xuan, from Malaysia, currently study at the Music School of Shanghai University. During the school, she has excellent academic performance and she is always ready to help others. In her spare time, she also takes an active part in various activities and competitions on and off campus. In the past year, she won the gold medal in the 2020 Malaysian Piano Preliminary Competition, shortlisted for the second round of the 2020 " Telling Story about China Communication Competition”, her essay was selected into the book of the 5th "Furong Cup" National Literature Competition in China. In addition, she also participated in Alibaba GET Challenge contest, Shanghai University Chinese and Foreign Students' New Year Party, the 2nd Safety Knowledge Week Competition of Shanghai University, etc. "Always treat yesterday's self as a new enemy, because the past self is there to be surpassed" is her life motto.

TJEN CELINE，from Indonesia, student in School of Economics. During her study, she is serious and hardworking, dedicated to research, and always has the highest GPA. She was awarded the 2019 Shanghai University Scholarship for Outstanding Students, the "Finalist Award" in the 2019 China Student Advertising Arts Festival, and the “Excellence Award” in video category in "1,000 Moments of Smoke-free Shanghai" public welfare campaign for tobacco control.

Shanghai University’s diverse curriculum has made her more open-minded, and the learning environment during COVID-19 has encouraged her to be more innovative. During the summer of 2020, she participated in the Shanghai University Summer Social Practice Program and completed the project "Combating the Epidemic: International Students in China in Action: A Practical Exploration Based on Five Countries: Canada, Malaysia, Laos, Indonesia, and Vietnam" with classmates from different countries. In Indonesia, she conducted a charity bake sale used the proceeds to purchase medical supplies to donate to local medical staff. Meanwhile, in 2020, she also participated in the "Sail to Hangzhou" Global Youth Training Program of Cross-Border E-commerce Talents launched by China (Hangzhou) Cross-border E-commerce Comprehensive Pilot Area and Alibaba Express, and won the third prize in the "Voyage Plan".
