Wenzhou University (WZU) is a comprehensive regional university established with the approval of the Ministry of Education of China. It was founded through the merger of Wenzhou Normal College and the Former Wenzhou University, which were founded in the year of 1956 and 1984 respectively.

                        Superior Location

WZU is located in the beautiful and prosperous city of Wenzhou in Zhejiang Province. Wenzhou is a coastal city in the south-eastern part of China; it is the economic and cultural center as well as the transportation hub of the southern region of Zhejiang province, with Shanghai and Hangzhou to its north, Fujian and Guangdong to its south. The two main campuses of WZU are situated in Wenzhou’s Chashan University Town, an area surrounded by green mountains and blue rivers. WZU is with a total area of 1.7 square kilometers (i.e. 419 acres), and the housing area is 820,000 square meters. The library boasts a collection of approximately 1.59 million books. The value of teaching instruments and research equipment totaled 200 million RMB.

                     Advanced Teaching Ability

WZU was authorized to award master degrees in the year of 2003, and currently 20 disciplines are entitled to award M.A. or M.S. degrees. There are 45 undergraduate programs, among which 6 are provincial key programs, 2 trial programs of educational reform sponsored by the Ministry of Education. The undergraduate programs cover 9 major discipline areas, which are Philosophy, Economics, Law, Pedagogics, Literature, History, Science, Engineering and Management. And there are 4 provincial key disciplines: Organic Chemistry, Materials Science, Theory of Literature and Art, and the Study of Folklore. According to a report by the China University Alumni Association (CUAA) in 2007, WZU has 4 discipline categories ranked Top 100 among all the universities in China, these discipline categories are the Science of Law, Pedagogics, Literature and Science.

                  Advanced Research Ability

WZU houses 45 research institutes, 27 laboratories and experiment centers; among those 1 is a provincial key laboratory, 4 are key laboratories at the municipal level. During the Tenth Five-year Plan Period, WZU gained the lead of 19 National Natural Science Fund projects, 11 National Social Science Fund projects, 58 Provincial Science and Engineering projects, 167 Provincial Humanities and Social Science projects, 167 Municipal Science and Engineering projects, 180 Municipal Humanities and Social Science projects, and had won 7 Provincial Technological Innovation titles, 13 Provincial Social Science Achievement titles. The quantity of high quality papers was greatly increased, in the years of 2005 and 2006, over 300 papers had been cited by the SCI indexes. According to findings recently announced by the Ministry of Science and Technology of China, WZU ranked top 100 in terms of papers included by SCI indexes among all the universities in China.

WZUs concept of running the university is "students-centered, quality-based, developing excellence and features while providing educational and research service for the broader community", with "Keep learning and seeking truth with robust pioneering spirits" as the motto of the university. WZU promotes a "3 self-determination" reform for its students, which is to encourage students to choose their majors/specialties, courses in a curriculum, and teachers/tutors on their own; and WZU has the Credit System, Major and Subsidiary Courses System, Double Majors and Double Degrees System carried out.

With these efforts, together with others, WZU hopes to achieve the objective of diversification in educational methods and goals, scientification in the management of teaching affairs. The graduates from WZU are well received by employers both from and outside Wenzhou because of their preparedness and suitability to their jobs and also their open and innovative minds. In recent years, the employment rates of WZU graduates is steadily kept at above 90% and it has been found through follow-up investigation that more than 92.5% of employers are satisfactory with graduates from WZU.

                        Broad International Cooperation

WZU had been certified to recruit international students, and it is one of earliest Bases of Chinese Language Education. Many fields are open for WZU to cooperate with foreign institutions of higher learning. At present, WZU has entered into cooperative relationships with more than 20 educational institutions and scientific research institutes of U.S., U.K. and Japan in the form of joint educational programs, student exchanges, visiting scholar schemes, and the like.

Wenzhou University (WZU) is a dynamic and comprehensive regional university growing up with the reform and opening up momentum of China. It ranks top 10% among all the higher education institutions in China and ranks 10th in Zhejiang province. The university was first established in 1933 with donation from Mr. Huang Suchu, a renowned industrialist in Wenzhou. Six other schools were merged in its history to form the present Wenzhou University, which presents a rich cultural atmosphere and fine educational tradition.    Comprehensive University

Its academic programs cover 9 discipline areas including literature, science, engineering, education, law, economics, history, management and art.It offers 45 postgraduate programs and 55 undergraduate programs. It has almost 30,000 undergraduates, 1,000 postgraduates, 400 international students, and around 13,000 part-time students annually for continuing education.

Open University

Wenzhou University actively implements the strategy of educational internationalization and is vigorously engaged in various international exchanges and cooperation. 

As of December 2014, the university has established exchange and cooperation relations with over 60 universities and research institutes from about 20 countries and regions such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, the Netherlands, Canada, Japan and Korea.

Outward-looking Programs

The university has always attached great importance to international students' education and all the 55 undergraduate programs and 45 postgraduate programs are open to international students. Considering the limited Chinese language ability of some international applicants, WZU specially offers international students 4 English-medium bachelor degree programs (Mechanical Engineering, Applied Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, International Economy and Trade), 1 English-medium master degree program (Chemistry) and 1 "First Chinese, then specialty" 2+2 mode bachelor degree program -- International Trade (China-oriented). Those special programs are great opportunities for international students to learn specialty knowledge and in the meantime to get a better understanding of the Chinese language, culture and China's development.

Global Learning

    WZU encourages students to actively participate in studying abroad programs to develop global vision, adaptability and mobility. International dual-degree programs include 2+2 Bachelor program with Florida Institute of Technology, USA, in Mechanical Engineering; 2+2 and 3+1 Bachelor program with Coventry University, UK, in Business, Environmental Sciences, Civil Engineering, Art and Design; 2+2 and 3+1 Bachelor program and 2+1 Master program with University of Central Lancashire, UK; 3.5+1.5 Master Program with SUNY Oswego, USA, in Education.

The College of International Education is one branch of the Wenzhou University System with the main objectives of international cooperation; communication; introducing advanced educational resources abroad; developing educational programs based on the needs of economic and social development in Wenzhou; and practical conditions of the university; research and development of educational programs; education of foreign students; building and management of educational fields for students preparing to study abroad; the major of Business Administration ( Aviation Management) ; the overseas base of teaching Chinese as foreign language.

A series of courses are designed for overseas students: Chinese Training courses, Asian Study Program, and Trade-research and Study-tour, etc..
